What is a Miller A and Miller B? How does El Nino affect the STJ? How do the NAO/AO measurements get taken?

What is a Miller A and Miller B? Do Miller B’s ever produce snow for the SE? I noticed not many people are fond of it.

I might be completely off base with this next one but thats what this forum is for right? lol. If there is a strong Nino, does that make for a more active STJ, which would scoot all the energy up towards the SE US and give us more storms?

With measuring the NAO/AO, I see it written as -3.75 or 2 etc. How are these numbers gotten?

Chosen Answer:

MIller A and B storms describe the typical origins and tracks of cold season cyclones in the eastern US.

Miller A storms start in the Gulf of Mexico and come up the east coast.
Miller B storms start in the vicinity of the Great Lakes after which its energy transfers to the coast in the vicinity between Cape Hatteras and the Delmarva peninsula.

Miller Bs seldom…if ever…bring snow to the SE coast b/c they form too far north.

El Niño is generally favorable for a stronger STJ and creates an active storm track along the southern tier of states from CA to FL.

El Niño is classified as weak…moderate…or strong depending on the sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies in the tropical Pacific. The strength of the SST anomalies affects how much el Niño conditions influence the weather elsewhere.

NAO/AO index values represent standard deviations from the mean value (0). How they’re derived is is beyond the scope of this format.
